The file extension for files containing PowerPoint presentations is PPTX. In addition to this, other formats are also supported by the application:
- PPTM. These are presentations that incorporate Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
- PPT. Previous format to the current one. It was used until PowerPoint 2003. It is still possible to open this type of file.
- PDF. Used as a starting point for new presentations
- POTX. Includes a template for creating PowerPoint presentations. Its variants are POTM, for templates with macros, and POT, for templates from PowerPoint 2003 or earlier.
- PPSX. A presentation that always opens in a projection view. Its PPS variant was used in the 2003 and earlier versions.
- ODP. Format equivalent to the OpenDocument PPTX. It is used in Google Docs or LibreOffice Impress.
The above list includes the most popular formats. However, PowerPoint also supports opening or exporting XML, PPA, PPAM, JPG, TIF, PNG, GIF, BMP, or RTF files. As you can see, these include the most popular image formats.
It is also possible to insert video or audio objects into the presentations. The extensions or formats that PowerPoint supports are:
- ASF.
- AVI.
- MP4, MOV, o M4V.
- MPG o MPEG.
- WMV.
- AIFF.
- AU.
- MID o MIDI.
- MP3.
- WAV.
- WMA.
