Google's application to make video calls
As the most dominant company on the Internet, there's not a single area in which Google doesn't want to compete and excel to become the best. And, as couldn't be otherwise, the company of the search engine has also set its eyes on the field of video calls, dominated by Skype and in which chat and instant messaging apps of the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are already investing loads of time and effort.
Google's commitment to the VoIP protocol
And that's why Google Duo intends to be a decent alternative to Skype, also based on the VoIP protocol. Here's its APK that offers us an application whose target is to be even easier to use than its rivals. Its goal is to try to become more intuitive and simple.
Video calls from iOS and Android are yet another services offered by the search engine par excellence.
To manage to do so, it comes along with the following features that have turned it into one of the easiest-to-use voice and video call applications. Precisely one of the most noteworthy aspects of this software can be found in its totally clean interface without any elements that could make it uncomfortable or interrupt the usual use of its functions:
- A simple interface that allows us to contact our family and friends by means of video calls through a single button.
- High video quality for more reliable and pleasant calls.
- Multiplatform application to be able to communicate with friends that use any kind of smartphone.
- Real-time preview to check who's calling before answering.
A free alternative to Skype... but with differences
The thing is that Duo, for the time being, is only available for Android and iPhone, but not on other platforms such as Windows PC, Linux, macOS or even the web to use it from a browser. As you know, Skype is present on them all, therefore, it's a disadvantage that plays against this app when it comes to competing against Microsoft's product, possibly the best VoIP we can download at present.
However, to its favor, we have to point out that it can be downloaded for free and without any in-app purchases. Therefore, it can become a very decent resource to use if we're not trying to call mobile or landline phone numbers.
This movement made by Google has to be viewed from a global point of view, together with its other communications app, Allo. Together, they intend to replace Hangouts, the API of which will no longer receive support as the app hasn't reached the success expected in such a competitive sector such as messaging.
Requirements and additional information:
- Minimum operating system requirements: Android 6.0.
With a degree in History, and later, in Documentation, I have over a decade of experience testing and writing about apps: reviews, guides, articles, news, tricks, and more. They have been countless, especially on Android, an operating system...
