At this point, it's a bit silly to carry on insisting on the fact that Microsoft Office is the office suite that has managed to become a standard in this kind of software. Everyone knows that. At the same time, it's equally obvious having to say that it costs money that not everyone can afford or is willing to pay. That's why there are excellent alternative products, as is the case of OpenOffice or this LibreOffice we're offering you today.

An office suite for Mac with full guarantees

If you use macOS (previously known as OS X) and you don't want to pull your hand out of your pocket to pay for office applications, here you've got a free solution. It's a pack of tools compatible with all the formats popularized by Microsoft and that, inspired by the design implemented by this company, allows us to carry out all sorts of creation and edition tasks on documents, such as texts, slideshows, and spreadsheets.

Its condition of free and open-source software has led, not only particular users to download it, but also educational and public institutions that consider it the perfect way to save money on licenses.

One of the most serious and efficient alternatives to Microsoft Office.

What applications does it offer?

It comes along with the following tools:

  • Writer: text editor with different functions for editing and processing.
  • Calc: spreadsheet with advanced functions.
  • Impress: tool for slideshows that allows different formats and the inclusion of multimedia elements.
  • Draw: program to create projects, sketches, charts, and diagrams.
  • Base: database manager compatible with MySQL, Access, PostgreSQL and Adabas.
  • Math: an editor for equations and maths formulas.
  • Charts: tool for the creation of charts.

Which one is better? Why not OpenOffice?

If they're both for free, which one should you go for? In the first place, we have to mention that this program started to get developed when its rival was purchased by Oracle, and subsequently by Apache. Their features and functions are very similar, but LibreOffice's developer community is much more active, therefore, it's much easier to keep up to date in terms of software and performance. However, both applications share about 90% of their base code, so there's not much difference at all.

Requirements and additional information:

  • Minimum operating system requirements: macOS 10.12.
